| Charleville (An Rath) is situated in the Golden Vale dairying area of middle of Munster and is the most northerly town in Cork County. Founded in 1661 by Richard Boyle, who was the Lord High President of Munster, he named the town in honour of King Charles II. Later on the official Gaelic name was designated An Rath, but is generally known by the English name Charleville. Accessibility/Transport: The town is situated midway between the cities of Cork and Limerick, on the N20 National Primary route and is easily accessible from all directions. It is serviced by an hourly bus service to and from these cities with connections onwards. Charleville train station is well serviced by Iaranrod Eireann and one may be in Dublin in just over two hours by train. The town also has its own taxi metre service and is within easy reach of Cork and Shannon Airports and sea ports. Industry: Famous as the home of the Golden Vale Dairy and Food Company, which is now run by the Kerry Group plc, the company processes the milk produced by the farming community in the rich hinterlands of North Cork and South. Charleville Meats is another factory, which provides great employment and is another indicator of industry producing an end product from raw material provided by the surrounding farming community. Charleville is also one of the most important stainless steel manufacturing centres in Europe, with no fewer than five factories operating in this sector. These along with other smaller industries provide solid employment for hundreds of local people. A very active Chamber of Commerce is continually seeking to increase opportunities for the town and area. Retail: Charleville town is a thriving retail centre and the advent of national brand names. Lidl and Dunnes Stores (due to open in 2007), and with a Tesco Store pending, ample choice will be available to shoppers, along with the independent boutiques and smaller shops, Charleville is self sufficient in this area. Residential: As a residential centre, Charleville is second to none and its central location and huge choice of affordable housing makes the town a very desirable place in which either to live and work or to commute to bigger centres. Leisure: Charleville is blessed with a 27 hole Golf Course, GAA, Soccer and Rugby Clubs all with their own grounds plus the Schoolyard Theatre and as many as sixty other cultural and other interest clubs and organisations. For the more active there are keep fit gyms for both men and women. For children there is a free ultra modern playground area in the Town Park. |
